Learn about Tepahtiani Healing

Traditional Nahua healing…

is an authentic, time-honored spiritual healing system indigenous to the highlands of central Mexico. A healer in this tradition works in relationship with the healing forces of nature to address the spiritual root causes of illness and imbalance in all layers of a person’s being: body, mind, and spirit. Traditional Nahua healing is beneficial for physical illnesses and emotional and spiritual issues. Developed out of thousands of years of living, dreaming and engaging with the world and the natural cycles of living, this medicine has been known to bring deep and lasting healing, life-balance and beneficial transformation to the recipient.

The particular lineage of Nahua healing offered by some of the Asheville Weather Workers comes through their Granicero or Weather Work tradition. As trained and initiated healers in this lineage, these healers are each known by the title Tepahtiani.

Becoming a Tepahtiani is a divine calling. After experiencing life events like a lightning strike, special dreams or strange illnesses, the candidate’s calling to a spiritual path of working with weather is recognized by an acknowledged lineage elder in this ancient tradition. Then, the person is initiated. After proving their devotion and dedication to their work over time, the calling to walk the healing path of this tradition may arise.

The journey to become Tepahtiani involves an ancient process of building relationships with sacred medicine sites like mountains and caves and the Clouds, Sun, Rain, Wind, and Lightning. Through this time-honored process, these forces work through the Tepahtiani to bring healing to those in need. If, after years of intense training, pilgrimage, ceremony and sacrifice, the candidate proves to the tradition and teacher their dedication and capacity to become a healer, then after a final initiatory process, they are authorized to bring this ancient medicine from the natural world home to their community.

What is a Tepahtiani Healing Session Like?

Sitting with the healer at their traditional altar, you’ll share your troubles and receive counseling and often a spiritual cleaning called a limpia. Limpias come in a variety of forms, depending on your condition and needs.

The healer will often provide specific life guidance and “homework” to strengthen and heal you on your path. Regular healing appointments are often recommended to support balance and renewal.

  • Receiving a Nahua healing is walking into a space where you, as a human being, are not separate from the living world around you. As a Tepahtiani (meaning healer, doctor, or curer in the Nahuatl language), your healer will employ ancient, timeless ways to bring balance to your spirit and health to your body, mind and heart. These healings are done at a traditional altar.

  • As you know, house maintenance on the physical side requires attention, periodically and often. But, what has happened in your house over the years that has left a spiritual residue that could be affecting you and your family? Some weather workers are called to offer spiritual home and land clearings. The Nahua traditional path brings unique specialized rites that offer relief and balance through bringing your home and land back into balance with you and the surrounding environment.

  • When someone dies in your home — either a loved one or someone who lived in your house before you — a spiritual residue is left behind. This presence can affect the home and all who live there. Our traditional ways offer us the authority to lift that shadow and bring release, both for the spirit and for you and your family, so that your home is a clear space, supportive of life and joy.
